Abstract

Abstract

This unique collection of essays, edited by leading Woolf scholar, brings together for the first time a serious consideration of Virginia Woolf's writing within the political context of fascism. Virginia Woolf and Fascism probes Woolf's fiction and non-fiction from Mrs. Dalloway in 1927 to Between the Acts , 1941, for her responses not only to the growing menaces of dictators abroad, but also to mounting evidence of fascist ideology at home in England. The essays present a portrait of Woolf as a woman writer who was politically engaged, and actively protesting against a worldview which aggressively targeted women for oppression.

Abstract

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to and overview of the life and philosophy of Ernst Bloch. Bloch has had a strange fate in the English-speaking world. He wrote his famous three-volume opus, The Principle of Hope, while living in exile in the United States from 1938 to 1940. It was first published, however, in East Germany in the 1950s after he had returned to Europe and became a professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig. Gradually, his other numerous works became better known and widespread in Europe and scholars in the US and UK started to take note of his works. Yet, he has still remained a somewhat neglected figure in the humanities. While this book does not set out to entirely rectify this neglect, it does offer readers an introduction to Bloch’s works and the opportunity to understand more about the importance of utopian thought. Through an exploration of some of Bloch’s more controversial communist leanings and relationship to the Soviet Union, a study of Bloch’s utopian quest, and even a comparison with J. R. R. Tolkien, this comprehensive study demonstrates just how interesting a figure Ernst Bloch really was, and how his philosophy of hope has laid the basis for secular humanism.

Abstract

Abstract

This comprehensive chronological introduction offers a detailed analysis of Rose Tremain’s novels and examines the critical reception of her work. It situates Tremain – listed by Granta magazine as one of the twenty most promising young British novelists in 1983 – in the landscape of contemporary British literature by demonstrating how the variety of her work touches upon major concerns of contemporary fiction. The book aims to satisfy the needs of students by providing an extensive reading of Tremain’s novels based on critical discussions of key notions in contemporary literary theory and cultural studies. It includes a comprehensive bibliography and overview of Tremain’s critical reception. It points up the suitability of Tremain’s novels as practical illustrations of major concepts in contemporary literary debates.

Abstract

This book is about one person’s reading and what has been learnt about how the lives of other people, particularly authors, have been written in British literary biographies over the last fifty years. It is less interested in what happened in the lives of the people described in these biographies, and more concerned with how these stories have been told. It aims to have a conversation with British biographers, particularly Michael Holroyd, Richard Holmes, Hermione Lee and Claire Tomalin, to make their voices heard, to set them talking. It understands biography as an ongoing collaboration, not only between biographers and their subjects, but between biographers and their readers. This is also a study of haunting, in which we haunt the lives of others to help us come to a better understanding of our own.

Abstract

This book analyses the 1980s as a nuclear decade, focusing on British and United States fiction. Ranging across genres including literary fiction, science fiction, post-apocalyptic fiction, graphic novels, children’s and young adult literature, thrillers and horror, it shows how pressing nuclear issues were, particularly the possibility of nuclear war, were and how deeply they penetrated the culture. It is innovative for its discussion of a “nuclear transatlantic,” placing British and American texts in dialogue with one another, for its identification of a vibrant young adult fiction that resonates with more conventionally studied literatures of the period and for its analysis of a “politics of vulnerability” animating nuclear debates. Placing nuclear literature in social and historical contexts, it shows how novels and short stories responded not only to nuclear fears, but also crystallised contemporary debates about issues of gender, the environment, society and the economy.
